Summary of 2/8/2012 House Gaming Oversight Committee Buffer Bill Hearing

This is a summary of a Feb 8, 2012 hearing by the PA House Gaming Oversight Committee where testimony  was taken  from both  supporters and those who oppose HB 2082 aka the ”Buffer Bill”. This proposed legislation seeks to establish a “Zone of Respect”  i.e., a 10-mile buffer around the Gettysburg National Military Park and the Flight 93 Memorial at Shanksville, PA. within the boundaries of which a casino would be prohibited from locating.  First to testify was Paul Bucha, Medal of Honor…See More

Why do you oppose a casino in Gettysburg?
Gaming in Gettysburg would negatively alter the historic context of the surrounding community forever, not to speak of introducing a long list of other critical pressures and problems that accompany the presence of gaming .

Economic development for Gettysburg? Sure! But not through incompatible escapist entertainment that will only poison Gettysburg's present unique economy, not to speak of its world class reputation as one of the most precious historical sites and tourist destinations in America.

Historic sites are being endangered or gobbled up at an alarming rate. Aren't there places in our country so precious, so sacred, so intrinsically American, that we can trust they will always be protected? If so, Gettysburg is surely one of them! Would we build a go-cart track near the site of D-day (did you see "Saving Private Ryan?") Or a Water Park near the USS Arizona Memorial , or better yet, a miniature golf course at Independence Hall (to accommodate the busloads of Harrisburgers on their way to Atlantic City who ALWAYS stop in Phillie to appreciate its historic places!!

Go ahead, build a casino, but build it 10 miles away in either direction, not in Gettysburg!

Largest amount in fines levied at July 2011PGCB Meeting

Today's 7/21/11 Patriot-News reported that $355,000 in fines were levied on violators of the state gaming laws by the PA Gaming Control Board. This was the highest total ever handed down at a single Gaming Board meeting, and involved several casinos and a slots manufacturer.  Hollywood Casino, for the 2nd time since its license was renewed in January, 2010, was one of the entities fined. In October 2010, Hollywood was fined a total of $40,000 for 3 violations.

Response to Jess Haines @ G-Burg Times

Just  found this letter I sent after reading Jess's April article, and decided it had relevance for this site:

Dear Jess,

Thanks for your beautifully written and inspiring article, quite timely for the beginning of a 4 year-long sesquicentennial remembrance of the American Civil War. It was a breath of fresh air to a gal whose dad's maternal and paternal grandfathers both fought for the Confederacy (one of them at Gettysburg as a 15 year-old ). My…

Misguided Description of Buffer Legislation

I was saddened to see the words “irrational”, “bothersome,” and “unprofessional” used to describe proposed state legislation requiring casinos to be located a minimum of 10 miles away from two historic shrines. Each site commemorates one of the most significant and heartrending events in our American experience, both occurring in PA:  the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, and the heroic acts of Flight 93 passengers and crew which most likely saved countless American lives and our seat of government…
